Book, the Inquisitive
“Bah, what do I need that Cannith piece of garbage for?” said the old Gnome sitting in the plush leather arm chair. He was speaking of the monolithic warforged specimen before him.
“Great Great Great Grandfather, stop being such a piddly skim! This is Sentry, it’s brand new and it’s going to keep you safe; you can’t be safe during this Human war!” Replied a spry Gnome, he had a wicked grin on is face and seemed awfully happy.
“Double bah, this war involves Zilargo even if we aren’t on the front lines and I don’t need to worry about my safety. I Trust in the government…there is nothing to fear.”
“Trust only goes so far Great Great Great Grandfather Nim; you are a Lord of House Sivis, you can’t be too safe.”
As the stubborn Gnome continued to speak with the excited Gnome, Sentry looked down at its hands …life was new to it and just flexing its fingers was an interesting exercise. The two small high pitched Gnomes in front of Sentry were interesting to watch. Such small vessels for life to be contained in, yet they seemed to have more then the Humans that had created Sentry. The Warforged was confused.
The Gnomes continued to speak, but they spoke quickly and used many words from a pretty sounding language that the Warforged didn’t understand. Sentry continued to wait.
“Fine, I’ll keep your useless gift great great great grandson, but it will likely collect dust. I suppose at the very least it can hold my books.” said the older gnome. “Sentry…come here and hold this book for me while I read it!”
Sentry complied, carefully taking the old leather bound book and held it at eye level for the gnome.
“Hmm, you do that well enough! Sentry is such an unfitting name for you, your job is to hold books after all! I’m going to call you Book from now on!”
12 Years later…
Nim walked into the garden with a smile on his face, leaning heavily on a cane. Book looked up and would have smiled if she could. Instead she simply said in her expressionless tone “Master Nim, I’m happy to see you this morning. You seem to be very happy as well, is it because the Audairian Roses are finally blooming?”
“Ah Book, I had no doubt you would get those stubborn roses blooming! You have a green thumb…in fact I think it’s safe to say you have two!”
Book looked at her fingers, they did not appear green…she knew that “green thumb” was just a saying but she always double checked when someone said it to her. Master Nim’s family and friends often commented as such.
“No no, I am happy because of this!” Nim snapped his fingers and a newspaper appeared in his hand. Likely it was the Korranberg Chronicle, that was Master Nim’s favorite. The gnome pointed to the headline.
“Treaty of Thronehold Signed!” read Book out loud, picking the pitch of her voice up as the exclamation point demanded. “That is wonderful Master Nim…but what does it mean?”
“It means the war is over! It means Zilargo is an independent nation! It means that you are free Book! You have the same rights as the rest of us, whatever that might bring!”
“That…that is pretty big news Master Nim…but I haven’t ever considered myself a slave. I love it here in your manse, I’ve learned so much. I know how to grow a rose from seed to bloom, create arcane magics from my finger tips, and I can hold a book better then any stand!” Book would have had a wry smile on her face with the last comment if her physiology allowed for it.
“Book you can leave! You can see Eberron, see all of the Five Nations…and the rest of them! Besides, I’ve taught you all that I can when it comes to magic…your talents lie with conjuration and I only know the deeper mysteries of illusion. Certainly you are already a better gardener then I, so you have nothing more to learn there!”
“I would never want to leave you Master Nim” replied Book.
“I know you would never want to Book, but it’s time you see the world! In fact I command it, I could not live with myself if I didn’t let a seed such as you not germinate. You would only wither if you stayed here in the manse!”
“Well…perhaps I can find somewhere to stay here in Korranberg…your friends seem nice, I’m sure all Zil are like them…”
“You would be suprised Book…no Korranberg isn’t the place for you. Not even Zilargo is safe for you Book…it may look like a place of easy and joyful living but there is a more sinister side to it. I fear you would not be able to survive in Zilargo Book…no, a place of limitless possibilities is where you must go! Someplace like Sharn would be the place you could make your name, find adventure and develop your powers. Yes, yes Sharn is perfect!”
“But what shall I do when I reach there? Master Nim, I am scared of leaving…”
“Do not be scared child! I will pay for your lighting rail ticket…adventure, excitement and knowledge await you! You must be off!”
A few weeks later…
Book walked off of the lighting rail and into Tavick Landing…she had thought the train ride had been exhilterating but now standing here in the crowd she saw so many different people. Humans of different shapes and colors, Elves, Halflings, even some Shifters! Book was so happy to see so much life that she nearly dropped the potted Audair Rose she carried in one arm. Not knowing what to do next, she stopped a nearby Gnome and spoke to him in perfect Elvish. “Excuse me, but where might I find a good inn or perhaps a Sivis guildhall? I’m new he….”
“Don’t touch me you filthy monster! It’s bad enough they didn’t destroy the lot of you, I don’t need you pestering me!”
Book was taken aback and felt an incredible amount of anxiety…she thought this might be what it felt like to be on the verge of tears.
Unfortunately for the innocent Warforged this type of treatment greeted her at every bend as it seems that no one could look past her exterior and give her a chance. Book was completely lost and scared among the high towers of Sharn and after several hours of cold shoulders and insults she found herself in a great deal of emotional stress on a side street, trying to shield her rose from a particularly heavy Sharn rain.
Just then a man tapped her on the shoulder. It was a human with white hair and in his later years from what Book could tell. Still, he would probably be considered handsome by humans. “Excuse me…the ghulra on your forehead is quite unique. Quite unique indeed. I wonder if you would care to join me? You look new here and perhaps a little bit lost. My name’s Drake.”
TL DR Summary: Book is a Warforged, aged 14. Originally she was created to be a body guard for Nim d’Sivis, an old gnome with a decent amount of both political and arcane power. During her time with Nim she did very little protection work and instead helped Nim with his studies and eventually learned that she to had some talent in the ways of the wizard. When the Treaty of Thronehold was ratified Nim saw the opportunity for Book to leave her bondage and explore the world she had been brought into. Releasing her from contract he arranged for her to travel to Sharn and make her way in the world. Nim let her know she always could call out to him for help and that she had a friend in house Sivis. Upon arriving in Sharn, Book had a bit of culture shock and may have turned right around and headed back to Zilargo but fate intervened and she crossed paths with Drake d’Cannith, Drake has taken her in, given her a job in his inquisitive agency, and helped her learn about the City of Towers and its inhabitants. Book has been able to lend her talents as a conjurer to Drake’s team time and time again and has even started a garden out in the terrace of their shared living quarters (not an easy task with the small amount of light that makes it down to them in Deathsgate). Book is content, she has found a group of people she likes, has a profession that she does well in and a place to call home.
Race: Warforged – Book is a Warforged created toward the end of the Last War, although she was lucky and never actually fought in the war. In fact, she has been spared the hard labor and hatred that is normal fare for most Warforged and has lived a relatively isolated and pleasant life thus far. Living in Sharn she is slowly coming to realize that most people do not like or trust her simply because of what she is…even other Warforged she has met seem to give her the cold shoulder. Book takes this all in stride and focuses on the positives in her life….she has friends, a good job, and she lacks the identity crisis that plagues so many other Warforged.
Appearance: – Book looks like your typical Warforged and if she were “naked” you would not be able to tell her apart from any other Warforged. She does wear clothes however, usually those with a feminine leaning to them. While she does not wear dresses, she usually wears brightly colored, flowing cloaks and hats with a bit of frill to them. She realizes some may find her ridiculous to look at, but she is proud to have embraced her “chosen” gender. Book always carries a large spell book on her, as she takes pride in her name. The book is large, perhaps unwieldy in the hands of a human, but Book handles it with ease and knows what’s on every page of her book by heart. Finally, Book’s ghulra (forehead rune) is a complex symbol inlaid with onyx…Book sees no significance in it but Drake seems to know a secret or two about it.
Class: Wizard – Master Nim is a powerful illusionist whom Book was “apprenticed” too. While Book did learn some illusion magic, her true talents lie within conjuration. She delights in “bringing to life” different arcane entities and then using them to help her and her allies. While some may find it odd to see a Warforged who isn’t skilled with a sword, Book shrugs it off…she was made wield magic as far as she is concerned. Book finds it somewhat ironic that a living construct is so skilled in creating and nurturing life both in the laboratory and the garden.
Profession: Inquisitive – Book fills a utility role for Drake’s Inquisitives…she can usually conjure something for any situation, is a wealth of arcane and mundane knowledge, and in a jam she can produce quite a bit of fire power. When one of her coworkers has a question or a piece of evidence they can’t figure out they often bring it to Book…if she doesn’t know the answer to something she will spend hours researching until she does. And once she does, she never forgets.
Deity: None – Book has had very little exposure to religion…she knows what she has read but she has never felt anything divine within herself. She questions if she has a soul and if she doesn’t does that mean that divine beings don’t give her a second thought? Book isn’t by any means anti-religion….in fact it would mean everything to her if she could truly find a deity to believe in.
Alignment: Lawful Good – Book usually stays within the lines of the law since being a Warforged already gets her enough unwanted attention. That being said, she would not hesitates to bend (or break) the rules if one of her friends were in danger.
